As much as I love a traditional navy stripe – be still my heart for an authentic Mariniere! I’m having a serious affair with this Season’s chic black and white stripes. They are the perfect way to indulge my obsession for black (I’m known for my “if it’s black I’ll by it” saying) while adding a bit of charm and wit to any outfit.
Traditionally known for being playful and fun, somehow black makes this most classic of patterns a bit more dressy and therefore more me. This trend is everywhere – chic flats to evening gowns – and it’s exciting to see how including just one of these pieces transforms any ensamble.
Those black and white stripes lend an air of sophistication to any outfit. Here are some favorite examples: Ralph Lauren‘s Blue Label Black and White Striped Peplum blazer is a great way to embrace the trend. It’s nautically inspired, but the jacket is updated with a flattering peplum silhouette that is decidedly retro-modern.
Famed fashion blogger Blair Eadie of Atlantic-Pacific rocks the London-based ASOS’ Stripe Ovoid Coat, now available stateside. It’s classic clean lined design is flattering to most body types. As a quick aside, although not striped, how can you not love those amazing Valentino heels?
If shorter jackets are a bit more your style, you might want to consider Robbi & Nikki‘s Striped Blazer from Nieman Marcus. Another stunner there is Robert Rodriguez‘ striped halter top. It’s perfect for that romantic dinner during your beach getaway…
Fashion forerunner Marc Jacobs is doing some really fun things with striped shoes. I adore his Mary Jane Striped Heel and Mary Jane Pony Heels. If flats are more your style, the Mary Jane Sequin Flat is too cute – and I also suspect too comfortable – for words.
Speaking of comfort, I’m also quite taken with the J. Crew Etta Canvas Stripe Pump. The wide cream and black stripes adding panache to any ensamble. The Etta is as functional as it is attractive, given the appealing yet chunky heel. J. Crew has also included an interior platform for all-day all-nigh comfort, how perfect for those long days. We can only hope more designers follow suit on this clever idea.
Michael Kors striped jersey dress is a casual take on the trend, one that brings back fond memories. I had a similar dress right after college and I’m happy to report the dress and I were a hit wherever we went.
Kate Spade has embraced stripes with her Flatiron Nylon Maryanne bag and I can see this becoming the classic going everywhere. Her Cinema City Popcorn bag recalls the wit and charm of the Lulu Guiness handbags I used to collect. It’s so fanciful and fun, I love it!
Probably my most favorite example of this fabulous trend comes from Oscar de la Renta, his black and white stripe gown the talk of New York Fashion Week. I love how it exemplifies what this is about, elegant yet playful and fun.
What are some of your favorite striped pieces this season?
